Bazooka Rally for Sustainability: Saturday, May 14

Driving gloves? Check. Map of the rally course? Check. Passenger team member who may or may not be a great navigator? Check. Thirst to learn about sustainability in West Michigan? Check!

A group of local activists and racing enthusiasts are organizing the first Bazooka Rally for Sustainability.  This exciting and educational race is scheduled for Saturday May 14 and sponsored by the Holiday Inn, WCYE, WMEAC and GVSU. This race isn’t just about who finishes first. Teams will only receive a limited amount of gasoline earned through the completion of sustainability challenges at each of a half-dozen stops in West Michigan.  Driving smart and efficiently while learning more about contributing to the local sustainability culture is the quickest path to the finish line, a trophy and the glory!

The Bazooka Rally crew will receive cars the day before the rally (May 13) and will apply reversible Bazooka Rally and sponsor Logos, prep them for the Rally as well as run all the rest of the gas out of the tanks. Based on make, model and estimated miles per gallon (mpg) found on, each car will be given a ration of fuel to arrive at the checkpoints on the course. (It’s advisable to get a tune-up prior to race day if your car isn’t running as efficiently as the website says it should as this will be the baseline for amount of gas provided.)

Think this sounds too easy? Adding more people (weight) to the minimum two passengers per car will add another element of difficulty to the already tricky course.

The course starts and finishes at the Holiday Inn in Spring Lake and includes checkpoints in Grand Haven, Holland, Ada, Grand Rapids and Muskegon. A complete list of checkpoints will be available soon.

Basic entry is $200 and includes:

- an awesome rally experience with added learning bonuses,

- rations of gasoline for the race,

- T-shirts and dog tags that read “Bazooka Rally for Sustainability”, and

- VIP tickets for the Post Rally Bash for all team passengers in your car.

Businesses that are interested in taking advantage of the marketing opportunities will want to consider the Regular, Plus or Premium packages that include banners, ad space on vehicles and in the Bazooka Rally Rag, web site recognition, and VIP tickets to the Post Rally Bash.

The Bazooka Rally team has conducted several local and regional rallies in recent years.  They opted to add the Eco-twist to their already exciting rally in response to the growing culture of sustainable living and the Local-First atmosphere in West Michigan. GVSU’s alternative energy technology research and development facility, local farms, environmental action groups, and water treatment facilities are only a few of the organizations that are leaders for a greener future and influenced the theme of this rally.

Join your neighbors in a little (friendly) fast and furious competition and learn more about ways to contribute to the efforts to preserve and conserve Michigan’s resources.
