April 6, 2011
The double-gold LEED certified WMEAC office is opening its doors for tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday April 9 as a part of the Gimme Shelter Symposium. Tour the office and learn about the green roof, rain gardens, lightshelves and more.
Gimme Shelter is a three-day event this weekend from April 7-9 at Fountain Street Church. The event is a chance for scholars, professionals, and the public to discuss what shelter means to America and how to push for more meaninful and sustainable environments in the 21st century. Gimme Shelter challenges the American standard of “more is better” in relation to personal, family, and community shelter.
Keynote speakers include Sarah Susanka, bestselling author of the “Not So Big…” books, John Peterson of Public Architecture, and Jess Zimbabwe of the Urban Land Institute.
In addition to the keynote speakers, the symposium includes presentations on urban forestry, cooking, neighborhood renovation, and local green building tours. WMEAC’s Executive Director Rachel Hood is part of the panel discussion with Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell at 12:30 on Friday April 8.
